Job Overview

We are seeking two experienced and motivated Band 7 Speech and Language Therapists to join The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust at the Gem Centre. These locum positions offer an excellent opportunity to work across community mainstream and pre-school caseloads, supporting the reduction of waiting lists and improving outcomes for children and families across Wolverhampton.

The successful candidates will work across clinics, pre-school settings, and schools within the local area, providing specialist assessments, interventions, and training to children, families, and professionals. These roles are well suited to experienced paediatric therapists who are confident working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for children with speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
  • Work across a range of community settings, including clinics, nurseries, pre-schools, and mainstream schools.
  • Provide training, advice, and support to parents, carers, and education staff to promote children’s communication development.
  • Develop and implement individual therapy and intervention plans tailored to the child’s needs, in collaboration with families and professionals.
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, and early years practitioners to deliver joint interventions and contribute to inclusive practice.
  • Use a variety of therapeutic approaches and resources, adapting to meet the needs of diverse caseloads.
  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary team meetings and participate in care planning, reviews, and case discussions.
  • Provide clinical supervision and mentoring for junior colleagues and support staff where required.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical records in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.
  • Participate in service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives within the Speech and Language Therapy service.

About You

You are a skilled and enthusiastic Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist with a passion for helping children reach their full communication potential. You are confident in managing a varied caseload across community settings and can adapt your approach to meet the needs of children with differing developmental levels and communication challenges.

You will have strong clinical reasoning, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build positive relationships with children, families, and professionals. Experience in both pre-school and mainstream community settings is essential.

Requirements

  • BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent qualification).
  • HCPC Registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • RCSLT Membership (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).
  • Minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience within paediatrics (community, mainstream, or pre-school settings).
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with a range of speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
  • Strong knowledge of child development, assessment tools, and evidence-based interventions.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritise workload and manage time effectively.
  • Car driver with access to a vehicle (essential for travel between sites).
  • Experience within the NHS is highly desirable.
  • Commitment to reflective practice, clinical supervision, and continuing professional development.

Working Hours & Conditions

  • Hours: 08:30 – 16:30, Monday to Friday (with 30-minute lunch break, flexibility available)
  • Contract: Locum – ongoing
  • Location: Gem Centre, Wolverhampton (community-based work required)
  • Remote Working: Possible for administrative and report writing tasks, as per local service processes

About the Service
