Occupational Therapist – Band 6
Job Overview
We are recruiting a motivated and experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust, based at Worthing Hospital within the Sussex NHS. This locum role focuses on providing timely and effective occupational therapy assessments and interventions within the A&E and Emergency Floor, helping patients regain independence and supporting safe discharge planning.
You’ll play a vital role in assessing patients’ functional abilities, mobility, and care needs to ensure appropriate interventions are in place, contributing directly to patient flow and positive outcomes in the acute setting.
Key Responsibilities
– Undertake comprehensive occupational therapy assessments for patients in A&E and the Emergency Floor, including activities of daily living (ADLs), mobility, and manual handling.
– Identify risks and assess the need for equipment or adaptations to promote safety and independence.
– Develop and implement treatment and discharge plans to facilitate timely and effective patient flow.
– Liaise with multidisciplinary teams including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and social workers to ensure coordinated care.
– Provide professional advice and education to patients, carers, and families to support recovery and ongoing care needs.
– Maintain accurate and up-to-date clinical documentation in line with NHS and HCPC standards.
– Contribute to the ongoing development and efficiency of the occupational therapy service within the Emergency Department.
About You
You’ll be a proactive and compassionate Occupational Therapist with previous NHS experience, ideally in acute or emergency settings. You’ll demonstrate excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and time management skills, along with the ability to make sound discharge planning decisions under pressure.
A strong team player with a patient-centred approach, you’ll bring energy, adaptability, and professionalism to this fast-paced role.
Requirements
– Degree (or equivalent) in Occupational Therapy
– Current HCPC registration
– Previous NHS experience (essential)
– Experience in acute, emergency, or hospital-based occupational therapy (preferred)
– Strong clinical reasoning, assessment, and discharge planning skills
– Excellent communication and multidisciplinary team-working abilities
Contract & Salary
– Contract type: Locum
– Contract length: Ongoing
– Working hours: 37.5 hours per week, weekdays (Monday to Friday)
– Location: University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust – Worthing Hospital (Sussex NHS)
– Salary: Negotiable, dependent on experience
