Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Highly Specialist Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist (Band 7) to join the Children’s Therapies Community Team at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust.
This locum role offers an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of children and families within the community setting. You will provide high-quality, evidence-based assessment and intervention for children with a wide range of speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN). Paediatric dysphagia experience, particularly with infants, is desirable.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver specialist assessment and intervention for children presenting with complex speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
- Provide expert advice and support to families, carers, and professionals across education and health settings.
- Work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) including occupational therapists, physiotherapists, paediatricians, and early years practitioners.
- Manage a varied community-based caseload, providing therapy in clinics, homes, nurseries, and schools as required.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of individual care plans, ensuring goals are achievable and family-centred.
- Offer specialist clinical input and guidance to support children with feeding and swallowing needs (paediatric dysphagia experience highly desirable).
- Provide mentorship and clinical supervision to junior staff, students, and assistants.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation in line with Trust policies and professional standards.
- Participate in service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives within the Children’s Therapies service.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary training and professional development programmes.
About You
You are a motivated and compassionate Paediatric Speech and Language Therapist with advanced clinical expertise and experience working with children with complex communication and swallowing needs. You demonstrate strong clinical reasoning, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to family-centred care.
You will be confident managing a varied and demanding caseload, working autonomously while collaborating effectively with colleagues across disciplines. Experience in paediatric dysphagia, particularly with infants, is highly desirable.
Requirements
- BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy (or equivalent qualification).
- HCPC Registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.
- RCSLT Membership (Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists).
- Substantial post-qualification experience working with children and young people, ideally within an NHS community setting.
- Strong background in assessment and intervention for speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
- Paediatric dysphagia experience, particularly with infants, is desirable.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Knowledge of current legislation, clinical guidelines, and best practice relating to paediatric therapy services.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and reflective practice.
Working Hours & Conditions
- Hours: 5 days per week, 7.5 hours per day (plus 30-minute unpaid lunch break)
- Days: Monday to Friday
- Contract: Locum – ongoing (initially until 28th November, subject to review)
- Location: Green Wrythe Lane Clinic, Carshalton
