Senior Social Worker – Children’s Services (Wokingham Borough Council)

Job Overview

We are recruiting an experienced **Senior Social Worker (Qualified Social Worker – QSW)** to join the **Wokingham Borough Council Children’s Services team**. This role focuses on safeguarding children, supporting families, and providing professional guidance to colleagues while managing complex casework.

As a Senior Social Worker, you will lead on challenging cases, support less experienced staff, and ensure the delivery of high-quality, child-centred practice across the service.

Key Responsibilities

Lead on complex safeguarding and child protection cases.

Undertake statutory assessments under the Children Act to identify risks, needs, and strengths.

Develop, implement, and review care and protection plans focused on children’s best interests.

Provide guidance, mentoring, and informal support to junior and newly qualified social workers.

Prepare and present clear, evidence-based reports for child protection conferences, statutory reviews, and court proceedings.

Work directly with children, families, and carers to build strong, supportive relationships.

Collaborate with partner agencies including schools, health services, police, and voluntary organisations.

Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant case records in line with legislation and Wokingham Borough Council policies.

Contribute to reflective supervision, team learning, and service improvement activities.

About You

You are a confident and motivated social worker with strong safeguarding experience. You are skilled at handling complex casework, supporting colleagues, and ensuring children remain at the centre of all decisions.

Requirements

Qualified Social Worker (QSW) with registration to **Social Work England**.

Substantial post-qualification experience in Children’s Services.

Proven ability to manage complex safeguarding and child protection cases.

Experience of supporting or mentoring less experienced colleagues.

Excellent knowledge of child protection legislation, statutory frameworks, and best practice.

Strong communication, assessment, and report-writing skills.
