Locum Social Worker – Assessment Team
Role Overview
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an experienced Locum Social Worker to join the Assessment Team within Children’s Services. This is a full-time position working 36 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm), with contracts reviewed every three months.
You will play a vital role in undertaking statutory assessments, identifying risks, and ensuring children and families receive timely and appropriate interventions. Working within a fast-paced frontline team, you will complete high-quality assessments, work directly with children and families, and collaborate with partner agencies to safeguard children and promote positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake statutory assessments of children and families in accordance with relevant legislation and statutory guidance.
- Assess levels of risk and need, making informed decisions to safeguard children.
- Carry out effective direct work with children to understand and represent their wishes and feelings.
- Develop robust plans to ensure children receive the right support at the right time.
- Work collaboratively with partner agencies, including education, health, police and legal services.
- Prepare high-quality assessments, reports and case recordings.
- Ensure all work complies with Children’s Services policies, procedures and statutory timescales.
About You
You will be an experienced Children’s Social Worker with a strong background in assessment work and frontline safeguarding. You will be confident managing complex situations, making sound professional decisions and building positive relationships with children, families and partner agencies.
Requirements
- Qualified Social Worker with current Social Work England registration.
- Previous experience working within a Children’s Assessment Team.
- Excellent knowledge of children’s legislation, safeguarding practice and Child Protection procedures.
- Strong direct work skills with children and families.
- Excellent assessment, analytical and report writing skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a busy statutory children’s service.

- Hours: 36 hours per week, Monday to Friday (9:00am – 5:00pm)
- Contract: Reviewed every 3 months
- Working Pattern: Hybrid – 5 days per week in the office during duty weeks and 2 days per week during non-duty weeks.
- Office Base: Havering Town Hall
- Equipment: Laptop and equipment to be collected from Havering Town Hall.
- Pay Rate: London Pledge Social Work Agency Rate.
