Social Worker – Children’s Services

Brief Job Overview

 
We are looking for a dedicated and experienced Social Worker to join the Children’s Services Team at Dorset Council on a 3-month locum contract. This is an excellent opportunity to become part of a well-structured and supportive service committed to safeguarding and improving the lives of children, young people, and families across Dorset.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of children and families, ensuring that all interventions and care plans are carried out in line with statutory duties and local procedures.
• Undertake assessments, Child in Need (CIN), and Child Protection (CP) work in accordance with the Children Act 1989 and Working Together to Safeguard Children guidance.
• Develop outcome-focused care and safety plans that promote stability, wellbeing, and positive outcomes for children and young people.
• Build effective relationships with children and families to understand their needs, identify risks, and implement interventions that bring sustainable change.
• Work collaboratively with partner agencies including education, health, and the police to ensure coordinated support for families.
• Prepare clear and analytical reports for case reviews, court proceedings, and child protection conferences.
• Participate in team meetings, reflective supervision, and service development activities to maintain best practice standards.
• Promote a strengths-based and relationship-focused approach to social work practice within the team.

Requirements

• Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
• At least two years’ post-qualified experience in statutory children’s social care.
• Experience in Child in Need, Child Protection, or Looked After Children work.
• Comprehensive knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and associated legislation.
• Strong assessment, planning, and report-writing skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and multi-agency working skills.
• Commitment to child-centred, strengths-based practice.
• Ability to work flexibly and manage competing priorities.
