Brief Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Advanced Adult Social Worker with Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) status to join the Adult Social Care Service at Halton Council. This locum role is suited to a highly skilled practitioner who can provide specialist mental health interventions, manage complex cases, and undertake statutory AMHP duties in accordance with the Mental Health Act 1983.
You will play a key role in promoting independence, safeguarding adults at risk, and ensuring individuals receive the right care and support at the right time.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out statutory functions as an Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) under the Mental Health Act 1983, including coordinating and conducting Mental Health Act assessments.
- Undertake complex assessments under the Care Act 2014, developing person-centred support plans that promote wellbeing and independence.
- Manage a caseload of adults with complex and enduring mental health needs, ensuring high-quality and timely interventions.
- Provide professional guidance and consultation to social workers and other professionals across adult social care and mental health services.
- Undertake safeguarding enquiries and lead on risk management in collaboration with partner agencies.
- Promote recovery-focused and strengths-based approaches to social work practice.
- Work closely with health partners, housing providers, and voluntary organisations to ensure coordinated, multi-agency responses.
- Provide mentorship, support, and supervision to less experienced social workers, helping to embed high-quality professional practice across the team.
- Maintain accurate and compliant records in line with local authority policy, professional standards, and data protection regulations.

You are a confident and reflective social worker with a passion for improving outcomes for adults with mental health needs. You bring extensive experience in adult social care and a deep understanding of the Mental Health Act, the Care Act, and safeguarding legislation. Requirements
- Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
- Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) qualification – essential.
- Substantial post-qualified experience within adult mental health or social care settings.
- Strong knowledge of the Mental Health Act 1983, Care Act 2014, and Mental Capacity Act 2005.
- Experience managing complex cases and delivering evidence-based interventions.
- Proven ability to undertake risk assessments and manage safeguarding enquiries.
- Excellent communication, analytical, and report-writing skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and reflective supervision.
