Hand Therapist – Band 7 (Bedfordshire NHS, Luton & Bedford)
Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Hand Therapist (Band 7) to join the Bedfordshire NHS therapy team, working across Luton and Bedford. This locum position offers flexibility for full-time or part-time hours and the opportunity to provide expert, evidence-based hand and upper limb rehabilitation in an NHS outpatient setting.
You will use your advanced clinical skills to deliver assessment and treatment programmes that promote recovery, restore function, and improve patients’ quality of life. Proficiency in splinting and experience working within NHS hand therapy units are essential for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct specialist hand and upper limb assessments for patients with surgical, traumatic, or chronic conditions.
- Develop and implement individualised rehabilitation programmes to promote mobility, strength, and dexterity.
- Fabricate, fit, and adjust custom splints to meet clinical and functional needs, ensuring optimal comfort and safety.
- Deliver exercise therapy, scar management, and patient education to maximise recovery and prevent complications.
- Collaborate closely with consultants, surgeons, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists to deliver coordinated multidisciplinary care.
- Monitor and document progress accurately, adapting treatment plans in response to patient outcomes.
- Provide training and guidance to patients and carers on self-management and splint use.
- Utilise System1 electronic patient record software (experience desirable).
- Contribute to service development, audit, and continuous improvement within the therapy team.
About You
You are an experienced Hand Therapist with strong clinical reasoning, manual dexterity, and a patient-centred approach. You combine expert technical skills with compassionate care, ensuring patients achieve the best possible functional outcomes. You are confident working both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary NHS team.
Requirements
- Degree in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy with current HCPC registration.
- Proven experience in NHS outpatient hand therapy settings.
- Proficiency in splint fabrication and adjustment techniques.
- Strong knowledge of upper limb rehabilitation, exercise therapy, and post-operative care.
- Experience with System1 patient record system (advantageous).
- Excellent communication, documentation, and time-management skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and as part of a collaborative therapy team.

- Position: Locum Hand Therapist – Band 7

- Pay rate: Negotiable (dependent on experience)
