Contract Length: Ongoing

Are you an Occupational Therapist looking for an opportunity to make a positive difference to adults in the community? The London Borough of Barnet is seeking an Occupational Therapist to join its Long-Term Adult Social Care Occupational Therapy Team in Colindale.

In this rewarding locum role, you will support adults aged 18 and over who have long-term disabilities, health conditions, frailty or age-related needs that affect their ability to manage everyday activities and maintain their independence at home and within the community.

You will undertake strengths-based, person-centred assessments and provide practical interventions to improve safety, promote wellbeing and help individuals achieve meaningful outcomes. This is an excellent opportunity for an Occupational Therapist passionate about enabling people to live as independently as possible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Complete occupational therapy assessments for adults with eligible social care needs, identifying functional difficulties, risks and barriers to independence.

  • Assess daily living skills, mobility, transfers and personal care requirements.

  • Provide advice, information and self-management strategies to service users, families and carers.

  • Recommend and arrange appropriate equipment, including simple, complex and custom-made solutions.

  • Assess for minor and major adaptations, including Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)-funded works where appropriate.

  • Participate in a designated duty day once per week, triaging incoming referrals and responding to service needs.

  • Undertake manual handling assessments and provide advice to informal carers and care providers.

  • Complete moving and handling assessments for adults with complex physical needs, supporting safe and appropriate care arrangements.

  • Work collaboratively with health professionals, housing providers, care agencies and voluntary sector organisations to coordinate effective support.

  • Develop person-centred, outcome-focused interventions that reflect individual needs, preferences and goals.

  • Promote independence, reduce risks and identify opportunities to delay or prevent the need for ongoing care and support services.

  • Ensure all assessments and interventions comply with the Care Act 2014, relevant legislation, professional standards and local authority policies.

About You

You will be a dedicated and compassionate Occupational Therapist with the ability to assess functional needs and develop practical solutions that enable adults to maintain their independence and quality of life.

You will be confident working with adults who have physical disabilities, long-term health conditions, frailty or age-related needs, and understand the importance of balancing independence, personal choice and risk management.

With strong assessment and communication skills, you will work effectively with service users, families, carers and multidisciplinary professionals to deliver person-centred interventions and achieve positive outcomes.

Requirements

  • A recognised Occupational Therapy qualification and current HCPC registration.

  • Experience undertaking occupational therapy assessments and interventions with adults.

  • Knowledge of functional assessments, daily living activities, mobility, transfers and personal care.

  • Experience or knowledge of equipment provision, manual handling and moving and handling assessments.

  • Understanding of minor and major adaptations, including Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG)-funded works.

  • Knowledge of the Care Act 2014 and relevant adult social care legislation.

  • Ability to identify risks, assess individual needs and recommend proportionate, practical interventions.

  • Strong communication, organisational and multidisciplinary working skills.

  • A person-centred approach with a commitment to promoting independence, dignity, safety and wellbeing.
