Senior Occupational Therapist

Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are currently recruiting for an experienced Senior Occupational Therapist to join Vale of Glamorgan Council in Barry, within South Wales Social Services. This is an ongoing locum opportunity within the Occupational Therapy and Specialist Assessment Team, supporting adults with physical disabilities, sensory impairments and/or learning disabilities.

The successful Occupational Therapist will work primarily with adults with complex needs, promoting independence, social inclusion and safe care. The role involves comprehensive assessments, specialist equipment and adaptation recommendations, manual handling assessments and evaluation of interventions to maximise independence and support people to remain living at home for as long as possible.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out Occupational Therapy assessments, interventions and evaluations for adults, primarily those with complex needs.
• Assess adults with physical disabilities, sensory impairments and/or learning disabilities.
• Assess and recommend aids to independence, minor and major adaptations and appropriate equipment.
• Complete manual handling assessments and evaluate the effectiveness and impact of equipment, adaptations and interventions.
• Promote independence and social inclusion while supporting safe and effective care.
• Work proactively to reduce reliance on formal care and support people to remain at home for as long as possible.
• Monitor recommendations for equipment and adaptation works and review provisions where required.
• Work within an interdisciplinary environment, liaising with social work colleagues and providing professional advice to team members.
• Develop effective working relationships with colleagues across the NHS, Social Services, other Council directorates and voluntary organisations.
• Work as part of the Council’s patch system and maintain effective relationships with primary healthcare teams and GPs.
• Support and supervise junior staff, students and Occupational Therapy Assistants as delegated by the Team Manager.
• Contribute to fieldwork education for Occupational Therapy and other students, including leading or supporting the placement process.
• Maintain accurate, contemporaneous case notes and ensure computer-based systems are appropriately populated to evidence activity, assessments and services.
• Contribute to the development of services for adults across the Vale of Glamorgan.
• Prepare for and attend supervision with the Team Manager or authorised designate.
• Attend team meetings and lead or contribute to discussions as appropriate.
• Work in accordance with Council financial regulations, standing orders, policies and procedures.
• Promote equal opportunities and comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation and Council policies.
• Apply the principles of the Council’s Environment Policy when carrying out duties.

About You

We are looking for a confident Senior Occupational Therapist with experience working with adults who have complex needs, particularly those with physical disabilities, sensory impairments and/or learning disabilities.

You should have strong assessment and clinical reasoning skills, with experience in equipment provision, minor and major adaptations and manual handling. You will be comfortable working within an interdisciplinary environment and building effective relationships across health, social care and community services.

The role also requires someone who can support the development of others through supervision and student fieldwork education, while contributing to wider service development and maintaining consistently high professional standards.

Requirements

• Relevant Occupational Therapy qualification.
• Current HCPC registration.
• Senior-level Occupational Therapy experience.
• Experience assessing adults with complex needs, including physical disabilities, sensory impairments and/or learning disabilities.
• Experience assessing and recommending aids to independence, equipment and minor and major adaptations.
• Experience undertaking manual handling assessments.
• Strong assessment, clinical reasoning and evaluation skills.
• Experience working within an interdisciplinary or multi-agency environment.
• Ability to liaise effectively with NHS, social care, primary healthcare, voluntary sector and other professional colleagues.
• Experience supporting or supervising junior staff, students and/or Occupational Therapy Assistants is desirable.
• Ability to contribute to student fieldwork education.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with accurate case recording.
• Commitment to promoting independence, social inclusion and safe care.
