Occupational Therapist – Optimal Handed Care Project

Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are recruiting an experienced Occupational Therapist for a locum opportunity within West Midlands Social Care. Based with Walsall Council, this role supports the Optimal Handed Care Project, helping to maximise independence, promote safer care arrangements, and ensure individuals receive the most appropriate level of support through evidence-based occupational therapy practice.

The successful candidate will play a key role in assessing moving and handling needs, reviewing existing care packages, and implementing person-centred solutions that promote independence while reducing unnecessary dependency on formal care services. This is an excellent opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with strong experience in manual handling and optimal handed care assessments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake Occupational Therapy assessments using a person-centred and outcome-focused approach.
  • Complete manual handling and optimal handed care assessments to identify safe and effective support arrangements.
  • Review existing care packages and make recommendations to maximise independence and reduce unnecessary care provision where appropriate.
  • Develop, implement, and review Occupational Therapy intervention plans.
  • Co-produce care and support plans with service users, carers, and families.
  • Provide advice on equipment, adaptations, community services, and support options.
  • Prescribe and arrange equipment and adaptations to support functional independence.
  • Support and oversee reablement interventions aimed at maintaining or improving independence.
  • Review and reassess interventions to ensure ongoing effectiveness and positive outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary professionals, partner agencies, and support providers.
  • Maintain accurate case records and utilise electronic recording systems effectively.
  • Participate in duty responsibilities, team development activities, and service improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain professional standards in line with HCPC requirements, legislation, and local authority policies.

About You

You will be an experienced Occupational Therapist with a strong background in Adult Social Care, manual handling assessments, and optimal handed care practice. You will be confident working independently while managing a varied caseload and delivering outcome-focused interventions.

You will possess excellent communication, assessment, and problem-solving skills, alongside a commitment to promoting independence and achieving positive outcomes for adults with care and support needs.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current HCPC registration.
  • Experience working within Adult Social Care.
  • Extensive experience in manual handling assessments.
  • Knowledge and practical experience of optimal handed care principles and assessments.
  • Experience prescribing equipment and recommending adaptations.
  • Strong understanding of reablement and strengths-based practice.
  • Excellent assessment, report-writing, and case management skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and partner agencies.
  • Good IT skills and experience using electronic case management systems.
