Brief Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Occupational Therapist to join Bexley Council’s Adult Social Care Team on a locum basis. This role focuses primarily on Moving and Handling interventions, with a key objective of reducing double-handed care packages to single-handed care wherever safely possible.

You will work with adults with a variety of physical and functional needs, assessing their abilities and providing solutions that maximise independence, promote safety, and ensure cost-effective care delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake comprehensive functional assessments and risk analyses of service users’ mobility and manual handling needs.
  • Focus on reducing care packages from 2:1 to 1:1 by identifying appropriate moving and handling solutions and training care staff accordingly.
  • Recommend, trial, and review equipment and adaptations to enhance independence and safety at home.
  • Develop individualised intervention plans and collaborate with care providers to ensure effective implementation.
  • Provide expert advice and support to care agencies, family members, and carers on safe moving and handling techniques.
  • Ensure that all assessments and interventions comply with Care Act 2014 and local authority policies.
  • Complete accurate and timely case documentation using relevant recording systems.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team to achieve service objectives and improve outcomes for service users.

About You

You are a confident, autonomous practitioner with substantial post-qualification experience in adult social care. You have a proven track record of delivering moving and handling assessments and successfully reducing care package dependencies through practical, creative, and safe solutions.

Your communication and problem-solving skills enable you to work effectively with service users, carers, and professionals to deliver tangible improvements in quality of life and care efficiency.

Requirements

  • BSc (Hons) or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Recent and relevant experience in Moving and Handling and care package reduction.
  • Knowledge of Care Act 2014 and manual handling regulations.
  • Ability to assess, recommend, and implement equipment and environmental adaptations.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and analytical skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage a varied caseload independently.
  • Experience working within local authority or community-based social care teams is desirable.
