Job Overview

Telford and Wrekin Council is seeking an experienced and dedicated Best Interest Assessor (BIA) to support a short-term project within the Adult Social Care team. This role involves transferring clients from Appointeeship to Deputyship, ensuring that all legal, ethical, and professional standards are upheld throughout the process. The position offers a hybrid working structure and requires travel across the local area.

 

Key Responsibilities

– Undertake Best Interest Assessments in line with the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and associated Code of Practice.  

– Review and transfer 77 clients from Appointeeship to Deputyship, prioritising 34 clients during the first two weeks.  

– Complete and submit COP3 capacity assessments to support Deputyship applications.  

– Conduct face-to-face visits to meet clients and assess their capacity in relation to financial and welfare decisions.  

– Accurately document findings, decisions, and recommendations within required timeframes.  

– Liaise with legal teams, health and social care professionals, and family members to ensure a person-centred approach.  

– Uphold safeguarding principles and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and Council policies.  

 

About You

You will be an experienced professional with sound knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards. The ideal candidate will be highly organised, detail-oriented, and capable of managing a focused caseload efficiently to meet project deadlines.

 

Requirements

– Qualified Best Interest Assessor (BIA)  

– Up-to-date BIA refresher training (within the last 12 months preferred)  

– Registration with Social Work England or equivalent professional body  

– In-depth understanding of the Mental Capacity Act (2005) and DoLS framework  

– Proven experience conducting COP3 assessments  

– Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle (essential)  

– Excellent communication, report writing, and interpersonal skills  

 

Contract & Salary

Contract type: Locum  

Contract length: 4 weeks (with possible extension)  

Working hours: Full time, 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday)  

Location: Darby House, Telford and Wrekin Council  

Area: West Midlands Social Services  

Salary: Negotiable  

Working structure: Hybrid (mix of office, home, and client visits)
