Occupational Therapist – Moving and Handling (Locum)

Job Overview

We are recruiting an experienced Occupational Therapist to join Enfield Council within the North London Social Services area. This locum role focuses on the Double to Single-Handed Care Project, supporting individuals and their carers through safe and effective moving and handling interventions. You will work within the community to promote independence, optimise care delivery, and ensure safe, dignified support for service users while achieving best value for care resources.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive moving and handling assessments to identify safe and efficient ways of supporting individuals in their daily routines.

  • Lead on the Double to Single-Handed Care Project, reviewing existing care packages and recommending evidence-based solutions that maintain safety while improving efficiency.

  • Provide expert advice and training to carers, support workers, and families on manual handling techniques and the use of specialist equipment.

  • Work collaboratively with care providers, social workers, and health professionals to develop and implement person-centred care plans.

  • Prescribe and recommend appropriate assistive equipment and adaptations to promote independence and reduce manual handling risks.

  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and best practice, including the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 and local safeguarding procedures.

  • Maintain accurate and timely records, reports, and assessments in line with council and professional standards.

About You

You are a highly skilled Occupational Therapist with a strong background in social services and moving and handling practice. You have extensive experience conducting complex assessments, developing safe handling plans, and supporting staff and carers to deliver effective care. You’ll bring sound clinical reasoning, confidence in autonomous decision-making, and a collaborative approach to delivering positive outcomes for service users.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Extensive post-qualification experience within local authority or social services settings.

  • Strong knowledge of moving and handling legislation, techniques, and risk assessment processes.

  • Experience delivering training and guidance on safe manual handling to care staff and families.

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Contract & Salary

  • Job Type: Locum

  • Contract Length: Ongoing

  • Working Hours: Full-time, standard local authority hours

  • Location: Enfield Council

  • Area: North London Social Services

  • Salary: Negotiable, dependent on experience
