Brief Job Overview
A highly specialist Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist is required to work within special school settings across South London. This role focuses on supporting children and young people with complex communication needs and, where relevant, dysphagia (eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties).
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, delivering specialist assessment, intervention, and advice to pupils, families, and education staff, ensuring communication and swallowing needs are effectively supported in the school environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for children and young people with complex speech, language, and communication needs (SLCN).
- Manage cases involving dysphagia where relevant to the role.
- Develop and implement individualised therapy programmes within school settings.
- Support parents, carers, teachers, and school staff with strategies and guidance.
- Liaise closely with multidisciplinary professionals and external agencies.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and documentation in line with service standards.
- Provide peer support, second opinions, and informal supervision to less experienced colleagues and students.
- Deliver in-service training to school and support staff as required.
- Work autonomously while recognising professional boundaries and seeking senior advice when needed.
About You
You will be an experienced and confident SLT with strong clinical skills in managing complex communication needs in educational settings. You will be comfortable working independently in schools while collaborating effectively with a wider professional network.
Requirements
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
- HCPC registration (essential).
- Membership of RCSLT (desirable).
- Minimum 2 years’ paediatric SLT experience.
- Experience working in special school settings.
- Experience supporting children with complex SLCN.
- Competence in dysphagia management (relevant to role).
- Strong communication, organisation, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work autonomously within a school-based service.
Working Pattern
- 37.5 hours per week
- Monday to Friday
- 09:00 – 17:00
