Acute Occupational Therapist – Band 6

Brief Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Band 6 Acute Occupational Therapist to join the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, working across both Epsom Hospital and St Helier Hospital in Surrey.

This is a locum role for an Occupational Therapist with solid acute experience who is confident managing a busy inpatient caseload and contributing to effective discharge planning. You’ll play a vital role in promoting recovery, independence, and safe discharge for patients within the acute hospital setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist occupational therapy assessment, intervention, and discharge planning for patients within acute wards.
  • Manage an acute OT caseload effectively across both hospital sites, prioritising care based on clinical need.
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to facilitate timely discharge and promote patient independence.
  • Conduct functional assessments and recommend suitable rehabilitation, equipment, or adaptations to support recovery and safe discharge.
  • Contribute to early supported discharge planning and liaise with community services to ensure continuity of care.
  • Demonstrate sound clinical reasoning and evidence-based practice in all interventions and care planning.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with Trust policies and HCPC professional standards.
  • Participate in service development initiatives to enhance patient flow and quality of care within the acute setting.
  • Work flexibly across both Epsom and St Helier Hospital sites as required.
  • Provide guidance and support to junior staff and students where appropriate.

About You

You are an experienced and confident Occupational Therapist with a strong background in acute care. You thrive in a fast-paced hospital environment, bringing excellent organisational, communication, and clinical skills to support effective discharge planning and patient-centred outcomes. You are proactive, adaptable, and committed to collaborative multidisciplinary working.

Requirements

  • Qualified Occupational Therapist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Minimum of 2 years’ post-qualification experience, with acute hospital experience essential.
  • Proven ability to manage a varied acute caseload and deliver timely, high-quality interventions.
  • Strong understanding of discharge planning processes and community liaison pathways.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills within multidisciplinary hospital teams.
  • Sound clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision-making.
  • Ability to work flexibly across multiple hospital sites (Epsom and St Helier).
  • Commitment to patient-centred practice and continuous professional development.

Contract & Salary

  • Job Type: Locum
  • Location: Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust – Epsom and St Helier Hospitals
