Brief Job Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Specialist Occupational Therapist (Band 6) to join the North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) based at Kenwood Gardens Clinic. This locum position involves undertaking Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments for children and young people aged 0–19, supporting their functional and developmental progress within educational and community settings.

This role requires a highly skilled practitioner who can confidently deliver formal and informal assessments, provide professional reports, and contribute to multi-agency decision-making to support the holistic development of children and young people.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake EHC needs assessments for children aged 0–19 in accordance with statutory and clinical guidelines.
  • Administer and interpret formal and informal/non-standardised assessments to evaluate sensory, motor, and functional abilities.
  • Conduct assessments and reviews in mainstream school and community environments.
  • Produce comprehensive, evidence-based reports to inform EHC plans and educational recommendations.
  • Collaborate effectively with educators, health professionals, parents, and carers to promote inclusion and independence.
  • Provide specialist advice on therapeutic strategies, environmental adaptations, and support equipment where appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and data entry in line with NHS and Trust standards.
  • Work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to deliver high-quality, child-centred outcomes.

About You

You will be an HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist with extensive paediatric experience, particularly in education and developmental settings. You will demonstrate exceptional assessment and reporting skills, along with the ability to communicate effectively across professional boundaries.

Your clinical insight and evidence-based approach will contribute to improving participation, learning, and independence for children and young people with varying needs.

Requirements

  • BSc (Hons) or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • HCPC registration as an Occupational Therapist.
  • Proven post-qualification experience working with children and young people (0–19).
  • Experience in EHC needs assessments and school-based evaluations is essential.
  • Strong understanding of paediatric occupational therapy practice and child development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in producing high-quality reports.
  • Ability to administer and analyse both standardised and non-standardised assessments.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to work autonomously.

Contract & Working Pattern
