Assistant Team Manager – Leaving Care (Children’s Social Work) (London Borough of Havering)

Job Overview

We are recruiting an experienced **Assistant Team Manager (ATM) – Leaving Care (Qualified Social Worker – QSW)** to join the **London Borough of Havering Children’s Services team**. This leadership role focuses on supporting care leavers as they transition into independent living, while supervising and guiding a team of social workers and personal advisers.

As an Assistant Team Manager, you will provide day-to-day operational oversight, manage complex cases, and ensure high-quality support is delivered to young people leaving care. You will work closely with colleagues and partner agencies to ensure care leavers are supported in achieving their aspirations and living independently.

Key Responsibilities

Provide leadership, supervision, and support to social workers and personal advisers in the Leaving Care team.

Oversee complex cases involving young people preparing to transition from care to independence.

Ensure care plans and pathway plans are effective, robust, and reflect the needs and aspirations of young people.

Support staff through reflective supervision, mentoring, and professional development.

Monitor performance, contribute to audits, and maintain quality assurance across the service.

Work in partnership with housing, education, health, and employment services to support care leavers’ transitions.

Ensure statutory responsibilities for care leavers are met in line with legislation and Havering Council policies.

Promote positive outcomes by encouraging independence, resilience, and participation of young people in decision-making.

Contribute to service development, strategic planning, and policy implementation for the Leaving Care service.

About You

You are an experienced social worker with strong leadership skills and significant experience in leaving care or looked after children services. You are passionate about supporting young people to achieve independence and are confident in supervising and developing staff.

Requirements

Qualified Social Worker (QSW) with registration to **Social Work England**.

Substantial post-qualification experience in Children’s Services, preferably in Leaving Care or Looked After Children.

Experience of supervising staff or supporting colleagues in a leadership capacity.

Strong knowledge of the Children (Leaving Care) Act, relevant legislation, and best practice.

Excellent communication, organisational, and case management skills.

Ability to build strong relationships with young people, staff, and partner agencies.
