Brief Job Overview
We are seeking two experienced and dedicated Occupational Therapists to join the City of Westminster Council, providing expert support to residents across Central London.
These locum positions focus on delivering high-quality, person-centred interventions for individuals with complex physical and environmental needs. Working both in the office and out in the community, you will play a key role in enabling residents to live safely, independently, and with dignity through comprehensive assessments, equipment provision, and major home adaptations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a caseload of complex cases involving clients with multiple physical, cognitive, and environmental challenges.
- Conduct detailed home visits to assess functional needs, environmental barriers, and suitability for adaptations or equipment.
- Carry out complex manual handling assessments, including risk assessments, use of hoists and slings, and developing safe handling plans.
- Prescribe, plan, and oversee major adaptations such as level access showers, stairlifts, ramps, and through-floor lifts, in collaboration with housing and Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) teams.
- Provide clear clinical reasoning and written justification for high-cost equipment or structural adaptations, ensuring best practice and legal compliance.
- Work in partnership with contractors, surveyors, and housing officers to ensure all adaptations are delivered safely, effectively, and in line with residents’ needs.
- Support hospital discharge and hospital avoidance by ensuring timely provision of essential equipment and adaptations.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records, contributing to legal reports, safeguarding enquiries, and funding applications as required.
- Offer peer supervision and mentorship to junior staff, promoting safe manual handling and reflective practice.
- Act as the main point of contact for residents throughout the adaptation process, providing information, advocacy, and emotional support.
- Collaborate effectively with internal departments and external partners to ensure joined-up, outcome-focused service delivery.
About You
You are a confident and skilled Occupational Therapist with extensive experience in major adaptations, equipment provision, and manual handling. You excel at problem-solving, prioritising caseloads, and building strong relationships with service users and professionals. Your approach is proactive, person-centred, and grounded in clinical excellence and compassion.
Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy and current HCPC registration.
- Significant experience working within a local authority or community setting.
- Proven ability to manage major and minor adaptations and to work with vulnerable adults in complex situations.
- Strong understanding of equipment provision, housing adaptations, and relevant legislation (Care Act 2014, Housing Grants Construction and Regeneration Act 1996, etc.).
- Experience completing complex manual handling assessments, including hoist and sling prescriptions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex clinical and technical information clearly.
- Self-motivated, organised, and committed to delivering high standards of care and compliance.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to prioritise competing demands.
- Proactive problem-solver with a flexible and accountable approach to work.
- Full driving licence preferred due to community-based visits.
