Specialist Occupational Therapist – Band 6 (Locum) – Royal Shrewsbury Hospital

Job Overview

We’re recruiting a **Specialist Occupational Therapist (Band 6)** to join the **MERRIT Team (Medicine, Endocrine, Respiratory, Renal)** at the **Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust**. This is a **locum, on-site role** based at **Royal Shrewsbury Hospital**, providing inpatient care within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment. You’ll manage your own caseload of complex patients, applying advanced clinical knowledge to assess, treat, and support safe, timely discharge. This post is ideal for an Occupational Therapist with a strong background in acute inpatient settings who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative NHS team.

Key Responsibilities

– Assess, diagnose, and manage a specialist caseload of complex inpatients as an autonomous practitioner. – Provide expert occupational therapy interventions for patients within medicine, endocrine, respiratory, and renal specialties. – Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure high standards of care and efficient patient flow. – Support safe discharge planning and promote functional independence for patients returning home. – Contribute to staff development by assisting team leads with supervision, training, and appraisals. – Act as a source of specialist clinical advice across the Therapy Centre and the wider hospital network. – Participate in clinical audits, service evaluation, and quality improvement initiatives. – Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with HCPC and Trust standards. – Work flexibly to support Therapy Centre cover arrangements when required. – Demonstrate and promote Trust values in all aspects of professional practice.

About You

You’re a proactive and clinically skilled Occupational Therapist who enjoys working with complex inpatient cases. You’ll bring excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to make autonomous clinical decisions. A collaborative, patient-centred approach and a commitment to professional standards are essential.

Requirements

– Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy. – Current registration with the **Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)**. – Previous NHS experience, ideally within acute medical, respiratory, or renal settings. – Evidence of specialist postgraduate training or experience relevant to the role. – Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective multidisciplinary teamwork. – Ability to manage a complex caseload independently while maintaining high-quality care.

Contract & Salary

– **Job type:** Locum (ongoing contract) – **Band:** 6 – **Hours:** Monday–Friday, 08:30–16:30 (no weekend work) – **Location:** Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust – **Pay rate:** Negotiable (dependent on experience) – **On-site only:** No remote working available
