Occupational Therapist – Complex OT Team

Job Overview

Location: Walsall Council
Area: West Midlands Social Services
Salary: £28.40 per hour (Umbrella)
Job Type: Locum
Contract Length: Ongoing
Working Arrangement: Hybrid – two days in the office
Reference: U. RQ1790591. 013010. B21252

Are you an experienced Occupational Therapist looking for your next opportunity within social care? Walsall Council is seeking an Occupational Therapist to join its Complex Occupational Therapy Team, supporting adults, young adults, children and carers with a range of complex needs.

This varied locum role involves undertaking occupational therapy assessments for individuals with learning disabilities, mental health needs and other support requirements. You will help people overcome barriers to everyday activities, promote independence and achieve positive outcomes through strengths-based, person-centred interventions.

Working within a hybrid arrangement, with two days per week in the office, you will collaborate with colleagues and other professionals to deliver an effective social care occupational therapy service. A valid driving licence and the ability to travel are required for this position.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake occupational therapy assessments for adults, young adults and children with a range of complex needs, including learning disabilities and mental health difficulties.

  • Provide an effective and efficient social care occupational therapy service to individuals and carers.

  • Identify functional difficulties, assess individual needs and recommend appropriate interventions to promote independence, safety and wellbeing.

  • Apply strengths-based practice, personalisation and the principles of choice and control when assessing needs and planning support.

  • Work collaboratively with service users, families, carers and relevant professionals to identify practical solutions and achieve meaningful outcomes.

  • Ensure occupational therapy assessments and interventions comply with relevant legislation, national guidance and local authority policies.

  • Undertake safeguarding duties as required to protect children and adults with care and support needs from abuse or neglect.

  • Maintain safe, transparent and accountable professional practice in accordance with occupational therapy standards, ethics and values.

  • Keep accurate and timely assessment records and documentation in line with professional and organisational requirements.

  • Contribute to the wider work of the Complex OT Team, supporting coordinated and responsive services for individuals with complex needs.

About You

You will be a committed and adaptable Occupational Therapist with experience assessing individuals with complex needs within social care or a similar setting. You will be confident working with a diverse service user group, including people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and children requiring occupational therapy support.

You will take a person-centred approach, recognising individual strengths and promoting independence, personalisation and choice. Strong assessment, communication and organisational skills will help you develop appropriate interventions and work effectively with families, carers and multidisciplinary professionals.

You will also understand your safeguarding responsibilities and be committed to delivering safe, ethical and accountable occupational therapy practice. A driving licence and willingness to travel are essential, alongside the ability to work within the council’s hybrid arrangements.

Requirements

  • A recognised Occupational Therapy qualification.

  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Relevant experience undertaking occupational therapy assessments.

  • Experience within adult social care or a service supporting individuals with complex needs.

  • Ability to assess and support people with learning disabilities, mental health needs and/or children’s occupational therapy needs.

  • Understanding of strengths-based practice, personalisation and promoting choice and control.

  • Knowledge of relevant social care legislation, guidance and safeguarding responsibilities.

  • Ability to work transparently and accountably in accordance with professional standards and ethical practice.

  • Strong communication, assessment and record-keeping skills.

  • A valid driving licence and willingness to travel as required.

  • Ability to attend the office two days per week as part of the hybrid working arrangement.
