Specialist Occupational Therapist – Band 6 (Locum)

Job Overview

We are recruiting an experienced Band 6 Specialist Occupational Therapist to join NELFT at the Kenwood Gardens Clinic, supporting children and young people aged 0–19 across the North East London NHS. This locum position involves completing Education, Health and Care (EHC) needs assessments and delivering high-quality occupational therapy input within mainstream school and clinic settings. You will draw on your skills in both formal and informal assessment to provide comprehensive, person-centred recommendations that support children’s functional, educational, and developmental needs.

Key Responsibilities

  •
    • Undertake EHC needs assessments for children and young people aged 0–19, using a range of formal, informal, and non-standardised tools.

    • Carry out detailed occupational therapy assessments within school and clinic environments, identifying functional, sensory, and developmental needs.

    • Produce clear, evidence-based reports to support EHC applications, ensuring recommendations are measurable, practical, and aligned with statutory requirements.

    • Work collaboratively with education staff, families, and multidisciplinary colleagues to support the child’s learning and participation.

    • Provide specialist occupational therapy advice for mainstream school assessments and contribute to planning for provision within the EHC process.

    • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in line with professional, legislative, and organisational standards.

    • Manage a varied paediatric caseload effectively, prioritising tasks and maintaining a high standard of clinical practice.

    About You

You are a confident and capable Paediatric Occupational Therapist with strong experience in administering both standardised and non-standardised assessments. You bring expertise in EHC needs assessment and report writing, along with a clear understanding of how occupational therapy supports learning, participation, and development in mainstream school settings. Your strong communication skills and collaborative approach will enable you to work effectively with families, educators, and multidisciplinary teams.

    Requirements

      • Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy and current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

      • Experience in paediatric occupational therapy, including formal and informal assessment tools.

      • Essential experience undertaking EHC needs assessments and writing high-quality EHC reports.

      • Experience completing assessments in mainstream school environments.

      • Strong documentation, communication, and clinical reasoning skills.

      • Ability to manage a paediatric caseload independently and effectively.
