Speech and Language Therapist – Band 6 (Locum)

Job Overview

We are recruiting an experienced Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust, working primarily at Weston General Hospital, with the possibility of occasional shifts at the Bristol Royal Infirmary depending on service demand. This locum role focuses on supporting adult inpatients with communication and swallowing difficulties relating to a range of general medical, neurological, and age-related conditions. Dysphagia competency and the ability to manage a dysphagia caseload independently are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  •
    • Provide specialist assessment and intervention for adult inpatients with communication and swallowing disorders.

    • Independently manage a dysphagia caseload, delivering safe and effective assessment and treatment in line with clinical standards.

    • Work with patients presenting with diverse medical, neurological, and age-related conditions, adapting therapy plans to meet individual needs.

    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues to support effective care planning and coordinated rehabilitation.

    • Contribute to discharge planning by providing clear recommendations and reports.

    • Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with HCPC and NHS Trust guidelines.

    About You

You are a confident and skilled Speech and Language Therapist with strong experience in acute inpatient settings. You have established dysphagia competencies and are comfortable working autonomously with adults who have complex swallowing and communication needs. Your strong communication skills, clinical reasoning, and team-focused approach will support high-quality care across hospital wards.

    Requirements

      • Degree in Speech and Language Therapy and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

      • Strong experience working with adults in acute inpatient environments.

      • Dysphagia competence and the ability to manage a dysphagia caseload independently.

      • Experience supporting patients with general medical, neurological, and age-related conditions.

      • Excellent communication, documentation, and clinical reasoning skills.

      • Ability to work flexibly across sites when required.

      Contract & Salary

      • Job Type: Locum

      • Band: 6

      • Contract Length: Ongoing

      • Working Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 08:30 – 16:30; part-time considered)

      • Location: Weston General Hospital, with possible shifts at Bristol Royal Infirmary

      • Area: Somerset NHS

      • Salary: Negotiable, dependent on experience
