Assistant Team Manager – Leaving Care
Brief Job Overview
  
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Assistant Team Manager (ATM) to join the Leaving Care Service at the London Borough of Havering. This locum position is initially offered on a three-month contract with the opportunity for extension. You will play a key role in supporting the Team Manager to oversee service delivery, staff supervision, and pathway planning for young people transitioning out of care.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Team Manager in the operational oversight and leadership of the Leaving Care Team.
- Supervise, mentor, and support a group of Social Workers and Personal Advisers to ensure consistent, high-quality practice.
- Oversee pathway planning and transition arrangements for young people aged 16–25 leaving care, ensuring statutory duties are met.
- Provide management oversight for complex cases, including safeguarding and risk management.
- Chair case discussions, contribute to performance reviews, and ensure compliance with Ofsted and local authority standards.
- Promote education, employment, health, and wellbeing outcomes through effective partnership working.
- Support service development and contribute to audits, quality assurance, and continuous improvement activities.

You are an experienced and confident practitioner ready to take the next step into management or further develop your leadership skills. You combine professional integrity with empathy and a commitment to achieving positive outcomes for care-experienced young people. Your approach is collaborative, organised, and centred around empowering both staff and service users.
Requirements
- Qualified Social Worker registered with Social Work England.
- Significant post-qualified experience in Leaving Care, Looked After Children (LAC), or Aftercare services.
- Proven ability to manage complex cases and provide professional supervision to staff.
- Strong working knowledge of the Children Act 1989 and Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organisational skills.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage competing priorities.
