Location: Ministry of Defence (MoD) – Aldershot, Hampshire

Area: Hampshire

Salary: £28.28 per hour (Umbrella)

Job Type: Locum

Contract Length: Ongoing, initially 8 weeks

Tripod Partners are currently recruiting for an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the Occupational Health Team supporting the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) in Aldershot, Hampshire. This locum opportunity is initially for 8 weeks and involves delivering specialist Occupational Therapy assessments and interventions to support Service Personnel in their rehabilitation and return to work.

The successful Occupational Therapist will work autonomously within a multidisciplinary Occupational Health service, managing a specialist caseload and providing expert advice on functional capacity, workplace adaptations and occupational rehabilitation. The role also involves supporting the delivery of a peripatetic Occupational Therapy service and contributing to occupational health assessments, clinical decision-making and specialist reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work autonomously without direct supervision, taking professional accountability for clinical decisions and interventions.
  • Support the delivery of a peripatetic Occupational Therapy service within Occupational Health.
  • Manage an independent caseload of Service Personnel, ensuring each individual has an accurate, comprehensive and appropriate plan of care.
  • Assess Service Personnel presenting with a range of diagnoses, considering the complex biopsychosocial factors that may affect their functional abilities and return to work.
  • Evaluate the impact of medical diagnoses and prognosis on functional capacity, occupational performance and work-related activities.
  • Undertake standardised and non-standardised Occupational Therapy assessments to evaluate functional abilities and occupational requirements.
  • Conduct Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE), job demand analyses and workplace adaptation assessments to support Occupational Health recommendations.
  • Use specialist clinical reasoning to make complex decisions and produce detailed assessment reports and recommendations.
  • Provide clinical advice and training to multidisciplinary colleagues and external agencies on the value and application of Occupational Therapy within Occupational Health.
  • Assist the Occupational Medicine Consultant in providing timely and appropriate Occupational Health advice to key stakeholders.
  • Ensure professional advice and recommendations are informed by relevant Joint and single Service policies, current Occupational Health guidance and Defence Primary Healthcare (DPHC) best practice guidelines.
  • Identify individual needs and wider population trends through appropriate assessment and intervention methods.
  • Work collaboratively with healthcare professionals and relevant stakeholders to support effective occupational rehabilitation and return-to-work planning.

About You

We are looking for a confident and experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist with strong clinical assessment, functional evaluation and occupational rehabilitation skills. You will be comfortable managing a specialist caseload independently and making complex clinical decisions that support safe and effective return-to-work outcomes.

You will have a sound understanding of how physical, psychological and social factors can influence occupational performance and functional capacity. Experience of Occupational Health assessments, Functional Capacity Evaluations, workplace adaptations and job demand analysis would be particularly relevant to this role.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication, clinical reasoning and report-writing skills, alongside the ability to provide specialist advice to multidisciplinary colleagues and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Qualified Occupational Therapist with relevant post-qualification experience.
  • Ability to work autonomously and take responsibility for professional clinical decisions.
  • Strong experience in functional assessments, clinical reasoning and occupational rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health principles and return-to-work assessments.
  • Experience assessing complex biopsychosocial factors affecting functional capacity and occupational performance.
  • Ability to undertake standardised and non-standardised Occupational Therapy assessments.
  • Knowledge or experience of Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE), workplace adaptations and job demand analysis.
  • Ability to manage a specialist caseload and develop appropriate individual care plans.
  • Strong clinical report-writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary Occupational Health team.
  • Understanding of relevant Occupational Health guidance and professional practice standards.
  • Experience working with Service Personnel or within a Defence Occupational Health setting would be advantageous.
