Occupational Therapist – Prevention & Early Intervention

Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are currently recruiting for an experienced and motivated Occupational Therapist to join Walsall Council within West Midlands Social Services. This locum opportunity sits within the Prevention & Early Intervention service and is initially required for 2 months, with potential for extension.

The successful Occupational Therapist will support adults aged 18 and over with physical disabilities that affect functional ability. Working within a community setting, you will use a person-centred and strength-based approach to promote independence, wellbeing and meaningful engagement in daily life.

The role has a strong preventative focus, aiming to reduce risks such as falls, prevent escalation of needs and help avoid hospital admissions, formal care packages and functional decline. You will manage a diverse and complex caseload autonomously while working collaboratively with individuals, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

• Complete high-quality Occupational Therapy assessments using a clear person-centred and strength-based approach.
• Apply strong clinical knowledge of physical health conditions to inform assessment and intervention.
• Independently manage and prioritise a varied and complex community caseload, accessing supervision where required.
• Assess for and arrange minor equipment, specialist equipment and major adaptations.
• Support assessments and recommendations relating to major adaptations, including Disabled Facilities Grants (DFGs).
• Complete manual handling assessments and provide appropriate advice and recommendations.
• Contribute to rehousing reports where required.
• Provide effective signposting to appropriate services and sources of support.
• Work proactively to reduce risks, including falls, and prevent escalation of care and support needs.
• Support adults to maximise independence, wellbeing and functional ability within their community.
• Maintain clear, timely and comprehensive professional documentation.
• Work collaboratively with individuals, carers and multidisciplinary colleagues to achieve positive outcomes.
• Apply a strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the Care Act.
• Contribute positively to the wider team and support colleagues where appropriate.

About You

We are looking for a proactive and collaborative Occupational Therapist who can work confidently and independently within a community social care environment. You should have strong clinical knowledge of physical health conditions and be able to translate assessment findings into practical, outcome-focused interventions.

You will be committed to prevention and early intervention, with a focus on reducing risk, maintaining independence and helping adults avoid unnecessary escalation of care and support needs. Previous community Social Care Occupational Therapy experience is highly desirable.

Requirements

• Relevant Occupational Therapy qualification.
• Current HCPC registration.
• Minimum of 2 years’ post-qualifying Occupational Therapy experience.
• Previous community Social Care Occupational Therapy experience is highly desirable.
• Experience working with adults with physical disabilities and complex functional needs.
• Experience assessing for equipment and major adaptations, including Disabled Facilities Grants.
• Experience undertaking manual handling assessments.
• Strong understanding of safeguarding and the Care Act.
• Ability to manage a varied caseload independently and prioritise competing demands.
• Strong person-centred, strength-based and preventative approach.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential.
