Wheelchair Therapist – Band 6

Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are recruiting an experienced Band 6 Wheelchair Therapist for a locum opportunity with South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, based at Queens Park, Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. Working within the North East NHS, you will provide specialist clinical input within the Postural Management and Wheelchair Service, supporting service users to achieve safe, effective, and personalised mobility solutions.

This role is ideal for a Therapist with strong and demonstrable Wheelchair Services experience, who is confident undertaking mobility, posture, and pressure care assessments, prescribing specialist equipment, and working collaboratively with service users, families, carers, and multidisciplinary teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist clinical input to service users requiring wheelchair and postural management support.
  • Work collaboratively with service users, families, carers, and multidisciplinary colleagues to identify appropriate clinical and equipment solutions.
  • Undertake triage and comprehensive clinical assessments, including mobility, posture, pressure care, and functional needs.
  • Complete physical and postural assessments to inform appropriate wheelchair and seating provision.
  • Prescribe, review, and set up wheelchairs and associated equipment with active service user involvement.
  • Ensure service users are appropriately involved in equipment decisions and understand the use of prescribed equipment.
  • Manage an allocated clinical caseload effectively and prioritise work according to clinical need.
  • Use appropriate outcome measures to monitor and evaluate clinical interventions.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive clinical documentation and records.
  • Undertake medical device management responsibilities in accordance with service requirements.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures when working with vulnerable individuals.
  • Undertake physical and postural assessment activities, including bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Safely lift, handle, and manoeuvre wheelchairs and associated equipment as part of daily clinical practice.

About You

You will be an experienced HCPC-registered Therapist with very strong experience within Wheelchair Services. You will have the clinical confidence to undertake specialist mobility, postural, seating, and pressure care assessments and prescribe appropriate equipment.

You will be comfortable working autonomously while also contributing effectively to multidisciplinary working. Experience using ELMS2 within Wheelchair Services would be desirable.

Requirements

  • Relevant professional qualification and current professional registration.
  • Very strong and demonstrable experience working within Wheelchair Services.
  • Experience undertaking mobility, posture, seating, and pressure care assessments.
  • Experience prescribing, reviewing, and setting up wheelchairs and specialist equipment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise a clinical caseload effectively.
  • Understanding of safeguarding procedures when working with vulnerable service users.
  • Ability to undertake physical and postural assessments, including bending, kneeling, and crouching.
  • Ability to safely lift and handle wheelchairs and clinical equipment regularly.
  • Strong clinical documentation and record-keeping skills.
  • Experience using appropriate clinical outcome measures.
  • Desirable: ELMS2 experience within Wheelchair Services.
