Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are recruiting an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist for a locum opportunity within North East NHS. Based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, part of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, this role focuses on Acute Care and Hospital Discharge, supporting patients with complex physical health needs through specialist assessment, rehabilitation, and discharge planning.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with strong acute NHS experience who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You will manage a specialist caseload, deliver evidence-based rehabilitation, and work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, timely hospital discharges and positive patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a specialist Occupational Therapy caseload within acute hospital services.
  • Undertake comprehensive functional, cognitive, and environmental assessments for patients with complex physical health needs.
  • Develop and implement evidence-based rehabilitation programmes that maximise independence and functional recovery.
  • Lead complex discharge planning to facilitate safe and timely transfers of care.
  • Provide specialist clinical advice to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Work autonomously while effectively prioritising competing clinical demands and managing risk.
  • Collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and legally compliant electronic clinical documentation.
  • Support and supervise junior Occupational Therapists, support staff, and students where appropriate.
  • Contribute to clinical governance, service improvement, audit, and quality initiatives to enhance Occupational Therapy services.
  • Maintain professional competence through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and evidence-based practice.

About You

You will be an HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist with relevant post-registration experience in acute or physical health settings. You will be confident managing complex caseloads, delivering specialist rehabilitation, and coordinating effective hospital discharge planning within a multidisciplinary environment.

You will possess excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and organisational skills, together with a commitment to high-quality, evidence-based practice and continuous professional development.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current HCPC registration.
  • Relevant post-registration experience within acute or physical health services (Band 5 level or above).
  • Experience managing specialist Occupational Therapy caseloads.
  • Strong assessment, rehabilitation, and hospital discharge planning skills.
  • Excellent clinical reasoning, decision-making, and risk management abilities.
  • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication, report-writing, and electronic documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, health and safety, and current best practice.
  • Experience supporting or supervising junior staff and students is desirable.
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and service improvement.
