Occupational Therapist – Major Adaptations

Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are recruiting an experienced Occupational Therapist for a locum opportunity within Berkshire Social Services. Based with Reading Borough Council, this role sits within the Advice and Wellbeing Hub, specialising in major adaptations to help residents remain safe, independent, and well within their own homes.

This is an excellent opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with extensive experience in housing adaptations to play a key role in assessing complex needs, undertaking home visits, and producing detailed recommendations that support high-quality adaptation schemes. Working closely with Housing colleagues and surveyors, you will help deliver practical solutions that improve quality of life and promote long-term independence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessments for adults requiring major housing adaptations.
  • Carry out home visits to assess functional ability, environmental barriers, and adaptation requirements.
  • Produce detailed recommendations, specifications, and reports to support major adaptation schemes.
  • Assess and recommend specialist adaptations including stairlifts, level access showers, wet rooms, ramps, and other access solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with Housing teams, surveyors, contractors, and multidisciplinary professionals to coordinate adaptation projects.
  • Provide person-centred advice that promotes independence, choice, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Manage a varied caseload while ensuring timely completion of assessments and documentation.
  • Maintain accurate, detailed, and legally compliant case records.
  • Contribute to the delivery of high-quality Adult Social Care services and support continuous service improvement.

About You

You will be an experienced HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist with extensive knowledge of major adaptations and housing pathways. You will be confident undertaking complex assessments, producing detailed specifications, and working collaboratively with Housing professionals to deliver practical solutions that enable people to remain safely within their own homes.

You will possess excellent assessment, problem-solving, and communication skills, together with a strong commitment to person-centred practice and promoting independence.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current HCPC registration.
  • Extensive experience assessing for major housing adaptations.
  • Experience specifying and recommending stairlifts, level access showers, wet rooms, ramps, and other specialist adaptations.
  • Strong understanding of housing adaptation pathways and processes.
  • Experience producing detailed adaptation specifications and professional reports.
  • Excellent assessment, clinical reasoning, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • A person-centred approach focused on promoting independence, choice, and wellbeing.
  • Must be within commuting distance of Reading to undertake home visits.
