Brief Job Overview

Tripod Partners are recruiting an experienced Band 6 Occupational Therapist for a locum opportunity within North East NHS. Based at Sunderland Royal Hospital, part of South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, this role focuses on delivering specialist Occupational Therapy services within Acute Care and Hospital Discharge.

This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled Occupational Therapist with acute hospital experience who is passionate about supporting patients with complex needs through assessment, rehabilitation, and safe discharge planning. You will work within a busy multidisciplinary team, helping patients achieve the best possible outcomes while contributing to service development and clinical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide specialist Occupational Therapy assessments for adults with complex physical and rehabilitation needs within an acute hospital setting.
  • Develop and deliver evidence-based rehabilitation programmes that maximise independence and functional recovery.
  • Manage a specialist caseload, prioritising assessments and interventions according to clinical need.
  • Lead and contribute to effective hospital discharge planning, ensuring safe and timely transitions of care.
  • Use advanced clinical reasoning to assess complex presentations and develop appropriate intervention plans.
  • Work collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams to coordinate patient-centred care.
  • Provide specialist advice and education to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate electronic clinical records and produce high-quality reports in line with NHS and HCPC standards.
  • Support and supervise junior staff and students, contributing to mentorship and professional development.
  • Participate in clinical audit, service improvement initiatives, and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain compliance with clinical governance, risk management, and health and safety requirements.

About You

You will be an experienced Occupational Therapist with a strong background in acute hospital services, rehabilitation, and discharge planning. You will be confident managing complex caseloads, working autonomously, and collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver outstanding patient care.

You will possess excellent clinical reasoning, communication, and organisational skills, together with a commitment to evidence-based practice, continuing professional development, and service improvement.

Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
  • Current HCPC registration.
  • Relevant post-registration experience within acute care or physical health services (Band 5 or above).
  • Strong experience in rehabilitation and hospital discharge planning.
  • Excellent clinical reasoning and evidence-based assessment skills.
  • Ability to manage a specialist caseload and prioritise competing clinical demands.
  • Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication, report-writing, and electronic documentation skills.
  • Knowledge of clinical governance, risk management, health and safety, and best practice standards.
  • Experience supervising junior staff or students is desirable.
  • Commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and service improvement.
