Brief Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced, talented, and curious Children’s Social Worker to join Portsmouth City Council. Key Responsibilities
- Undertake comprehensive child and family assessments under the Children Act 1989 and 2004 to identify risks, strengths, and needs.
- Develop and implement child-centred care and protection plans to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people.
- Work collaboratively with children, families, carers, and partner agencies to deliver effective interventions and ensure the best outcomes.
- Use a strong theoretical foundation and understanding of legislation to inform professional decision-making and practice.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with children, families, and professionals, ensuring that children’s voices are central to all planning and interventions.
- Prepare accurate, high-quality reports and assessments for child protection conferences, reviews, and court proceedings.
- Apply anti-oppressive and inclusive practice in all aspects of social work, respecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of families.
- Contribute to reflective supervision and team discussions, supporting a culture of learning and continuous improvement.
- Maintain accurate and timely case records in line with statutory requirements and council policies.
- Actively participate in multi-agency meetings, promoting collaborative working to achieve safe and sustainable outcomes.

Requirements
- Diploma or Degree in Social Work and registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
- At least two years of post-qualifying experience in Children’s Social Care.
- Strong understanding of Children Act 1989/2004 and relevant safeguarding legislation.
- Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to converse with clients and professionals confidently and clearly.
- Exceptional written skills, capable of producing concise, analytical, and well-evidenced reports.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities to support child protection and risk assessment work.
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, managing a busy caseload in a fast-paced environment.
- Motivated and proactive, with a genuine passion for achieving the best outcomes for children and families.
- Understanding of anti-oppressive practice and its application in a social work setting.
- Team-oriented, collaborative, and supportive of colleagues, promoting a culture of shared learning and support.
- Confident IT user with proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and database systems.
- Empathetic and tactful communicator with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Ability to consolidate learning into effective working practice.
