Brief Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated and proactive Band 5 Occupational Therapist to join the Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust, based at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in South East London.

This locum role offers an excellent opportunity to develop your clinical skills within a fast-paced Emergency Department (ED) setting. You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to assess, treat, and safely discharge patients, promoting independence and ensuring smooth transitions of care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake occupational therapy assessments for patients presenting in the Emergency Department and acute wards.
  • Provide timely, evidence-based interventions to support safe and effective discharge planning.
  • Develop and implement individualised treatment plans that promote recovery, independence, and wellbeing.
  • Work collaboratively with Physiotherapists, Nurses, and other healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Assess patients’ functional abilities and equipment needs, recommending appropriate adaptations and support services.
  • Support patients and families in understanding and managing their care plans post-discharge.
  • Contribute to admission avoidance by identifying opportunities for early supported discharge and community rehabilitation.
  • Maintain accurate and professional clinical documentation in line with NHS Trust policies and HCPC standards.
  • Engage in regular supervision, reflective practice, and continuing professional development.
  • Contribute to the smooth running of the OT service within the Emergency Department and wider acute care team.

About You

You are a compassionate and enthusiastic Occupational Therapist looking to build your experience in an acute hospital setting. You bring strong clinical reasoning, excellent communication skills, and a proactive approach to patient care. You thrive in a dynamic environment where teamwork, time management, and quick decision-making are key.

Requirements

  • Qualified Occupational Therapist registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Experience working within an acute or hospital-based setting (ED experience desirable).
  • Sound understanding of occupational therapy processes including assessment, intervention, and discharge planning.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Knowledge of NHS systems and procedures relevant to patient flow and discharge.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and evidence-based practice.
  • Ability to manage a varied and fast-paced caseload.
  • Compassionate, adaptable, and focused on achieving positive outcomes for patients.
