Hand Therapist – Band 7 (Luton & Bedford, Bedfordshire NHS)
Job Overview
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Hand Therapist (Band 7) to join the Bedfordshire NHS therapy team, working across Luton and Bedford outpatient hand therapy units. This locum position offers flexibility for full-time or part-time hours and provides the opportunity to contribute to high-quality rehabilitation services within a supportive, multidisciplinary team.
You will use your expertise in hand and upper limb rehabilitation to deliver evidence-based treatment programmes that promote recovery, restore function, and improve patients’ quality of life. Proficiency in splinting techniques and experience in NHS outpatient settings are essential for this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide specialist hand therapy assessments and treatments for patients with post-surgical, traumatic, or chronic upper limb conditions.
- Design and implement individualised rehabilitation plans that promote mobility, strength, and dexterity.
- Fabricate and adjust custom splints as clinically indicated, ensuring appropriate fit, comfort, and function.
- Work collaboratively with consultants, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and nursing staff to deliver coordinated care.
- Monitor and document clinical progress, adapting treatment plans based on ongoing assessment and outcomes.
- Educate patients and carers on home exercise programmes, splint care, and injury prevention strategies.
- Maintain accurate electronic records using NHS systems; experience with System1 is advantageous.
- Contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives within the therapy department.
About You
You are an experienced and confident Hand Therapist with a strong background in upper limb rehabilitation and splinting. You have excellent clinical reasoning, manual dexterity, and communication skills, and are passionate about delivering high-quality, patient-centred care. You enjoy working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary NHS environment and are committed to ongoing professional development.
Requirements
- Degree in Physiotherapy or Occupational Therapy with HCPC registration.
- Proven experience in NHS outpatient hand therapy units.
- Competence in splint fabrication and adjustment for various hand and upper limb conditions.
- Knowledge of System1 or other NHS electronic record systems (desirable).
- Strong assessment, treatment planning, and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively across sites.
- Excellent communication and time-management skills.
