Specialist Occupational Therapist – Band 6 (Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust)

Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Specialist Occupational Therapist (Band 6) to join the Orthopaedics Department at Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust (NDDH). This locum position offers the opportunity to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care within an acute hospital environment, supporting individuals recovering from orthopaedic surgery or injury.

You will use your professional expertise to assess, plan, and implement effective rehabilitation programmes that enable patients to regain independence and safely return to their everyday activities. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Occupational Therapist with strong clinical reasoning and teamwork skills to contribute to a dynamic NHS service in Devon.

Key Responsibilities

  •
    • Undertake comprehensive occupational therapy assessments for patients within the orthopaedic ward, identifying functional difficulties and rehabilitation goals.

    • Develop and implement individualised treatment plans to promote recovery, independence, and safe discharge planning.

    • Provide specialist advice and recommendations on equipment and adaptations to support mobility and activities of daily living.

    • Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members including physiotherapists, nurses, doctors, and discharge coordinators to ensure coordinated patient care.

    • Deliver education and training to patients, carers, and staff on rehabilitation techniques, safe handling, and post-operative recovery.

    • Contribute to clinical audits, service evaluation, and ongoing service improvement initiatives within the orthopaedic therapy team.

    • Maintain accurate documentation in line with professional and NHS Trust standards.

    • Work flexible shifts (08:00 – 16:00) to support the needs of the orthopaedic service.

    About You

You are a confident and compassionate Occupational Therapist with a strong background in orthopaedic or acute hospital care. You thrive in multidisciplinary settings, demonstrate excellent problem-solving skills, and are dedicated to helping patients achieve independence through practical and evidence-based interventions.

    Requirements

    •
      • Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy with current HCPC registration.

      • Previous experience in orthopaedic rehabilitation or acute hospital settings.

      • Strong understanding of discharge planning, mobility equipment, and post-surgical recovery processes.

      • Ability to manage a caseload effectively and work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

      • Excellent communication, documentation, and clinical reasoning skills.

      • Commitment to maintaining professional standards and contributing to service development.
