Occupational Therapist – Children’s Services (Locum)

Job Overview

We are recruiting an experienced Occupational Therapist to join the Children with Disabilities Team at Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council within the North West Social Services area. This locum position focuses on supporting children and young people with disabilities, complex health conditions, or chronic illness to live safely and independently at home. The role involves assessing needs, coordinating adaptations, and delivering specialist interventions that promote participation and wellbeing within the community and family environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver a specialist Occupational Therapy service for children and young people with disabilities, complex health needs, or chronic illness, addressing both social and housing needs.

  • Undertake holistic assessments in family homes to identify functional limitations and recommend appropriate adaptations, equipment, or support strategies.

  • Manage complex and highly complex cases, using advanced clinical reasoning to formulate and implement evidence-based intervention plans that minimise the impact of disability and ill health.

  • Ensure the voice of the child or young person, and that of their family, is central to all assessments, care planning, and decision-making processes.

  • Work collaboratively across agencies, including Tameside MBC, Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, and other statutory and voluntary organisations, providing specialist advice on disability equipment, home adaptations, and manual handling.

  • Conduct manual handling and ergonomic risk assessments, developing safe handling plans that reduce risk for informal carers and families.

  • Manage a varied and complex caseload autonomously, demonstrating high-level problem-solving and professional judgement in all clinical decision-making.

About You

You are a compassionate and skilled Occupational Therapist with experience supporting children and families within community or social care settings. You have a strong understanding of home adaptations, disability equipment, and multi-agency working. Your practice is evidence-based, family-centred, and informed by excellent communication and analytical skills. You’ll be confident working independently while contributing collaboratively to multidisciplinary assessments and interventions.

Requirements

  • Degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy and current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

  • Experience in children’s services, particularly within community or social care environments.

  • Proven experience with major adaptations and environmental assessments in family homes.

  • Knowledge of child development, disability, and family-centred approaches to care.

  • Strong understanding of manual handling principles, risk assessment, and legislation relevant to children’s social care.

  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills.

  • Ability to manage a complex caseload and work effectively in multi-agency settings.
