Surgical First Assistant

Location: Reading, Berkshire
Pay Rates:

  • Standard: £55.24 per hour
  • Nights/Saturdays: £61.27 per hour
  • Sundays/Bank Holidays: £67.52 per hour

Contract Type: Full-time, shifts available


Role Overview:

We are actively recruiting for an experienced Surgical First Assistant to join a dynamic surgical team in Reading, Berkshire. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a cutting-edge facility, supporting surgeons across a variety of procedures and ensuring patients receive top-quality care throughout their surgical experience.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Directly assist surgeons during procedures, maintaining a high standard of patient care throughout.
  • Manage surgical instruments, ensuring they are sterile and properly set up for operations.
  • Monitor patient responses and vital signs during surgery and liaise with the anaesthetic team as needed.
  • Assist with wound closure under supervision and handle dressings post-surgery.
  • Adhere strictly to infection prevention protocols and theatre safety regulations.
  • Support patient preparation pre-operatively and post-operative recovery.

Requirements:

  • Valid NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Prior experience working as a Surgical First Assistant across multiple surgical specialities.
  • Excellent understanding of theatre protocols and best surgical practices.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • Willingness to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.

Desirable Skills:

  • Previous experience assisting in specialised surgeries such as orthopaedic or cardiovascular procedures.
  • Knowledge of surgical robotics or minimally invasive surgical techniques.
  • A commitment to continuous professional development (CPD).
