Job Title: Surgical First Assistant – Swindon, Wiltshire

Location: Swindon, Wiltshire
Pay Rates:

  • Standard: £55.24 per hour
  • Nights/Saturdays: £61.27 per hour
  • Sundays/Bank Holidays: £67.52 per hour

Contract Type: Full-time, with flexible shift availability


Role Overview:

We are seeking a dedicated Surgical First Assistant to join an esteemed healthcare team in Swindon, Wiltshire. This role involves providing expert assistance to surgeons during operative procedures and supporting the wider theatre team to ensure safe and efficient surgical practices.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide skilled assistance during surgeries, ensuring safe and effective intraoperative support.
  • Prepare the operating room and surgical instruments, ensuring all equipment is sterile and ready.
  • Assist with wound management, haemostasis, and tissue handling under the supervision of the lead surgeon.
  • Collaborate with anaesthetic, recovery, and nursing teams to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation throughout the surgical process.
  • Follow strict infection prevention and control policies in line with national standards.

Requirements:

  • Active NMC or HCPC registration.
  • Previous experience as a Surgical First Assistant in a busy surgical theatre environment.
  • Excellent understanding of surgical techniques, anatomy, and aseptic procedures.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.
  • Availability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and bank holidays.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in a specialised surgical field such as orthopaedics, urology, or cardiology.
  • Training in Advanced Life Support (ALS) or equivalent certifications.
  • Strong leadership qualities and the ability to mentor junior staff.
