Senior Occupational Therapist (Locum)

 

Location: London Borough of Richmond upon Thames & London Borough of Wandsworth

Area: South West London Social Services

Rate: £35 per hour (depending on experience)

Contract: Locum, Ongoing

 

About the Role

 

An experienced Senior Occupational Therapist is required to join the joint Occupational Therapy Service supporting older people and younger adults with physical disabilities. The role leads on Care Act assessments, support planning and case management, while also providing operational and motivational leadership to OTs and OTAs across both boroughs. This is a hybrid-working role with flexible hours.

 

Main Responsibilities

 

  • Deputise for and support the OT Assistant Service Manager, providing day-to-day leadership to Occupational Therapists and OT Assistants.
  • Undertake specialist Occupational Therapy assessments for people with physical disabilities in their homes, holding a small caseload of complex cases.
  • Recommend and arrange OT equipment, major adaptations and complex moving & handling plans.
  • Provide professional supervision, case management, guidance and expert advice to OT staff, social care assessors and students.
  • Screen incoming referrals to the service and allocate cases appropriately, authorising assessments and equipment as required.
  • Offer OT expertise to access advisors, team managers and partner colleagues, ensuring coordinated service delivery.
  • Make onward referrals internally and externally to support service user needs.
  • Ensure service delivery is person-centred, empowering and aligned with the Care Act 2014 and council policies.

 

Detailed Duties (as outlined in the JD)

 

  • Provide operational and motivational leadership to promote a positive working environment and high-quality service delivery.
  • Deliver professional supervision, including induction, supervision records, case audits and supporting CPD needs.
  • Hold and manage a complex caseload, maintaining high standards of practice in accordance with HCPC and organisational standards.
  • Facilitate personalisation and promote independence throughout assessments, planning and review.
  • Undertake specialist assessments including complex disability needs, moving & handling, housing and void property assessments.
  • Design adaptive and rehabilitative intervention plans, including Personal Handling Plans.
  • Review the effectiveness of interventions and adjust plans based on risk, goals and outcomes.
  • Carry out generic social care assessments and arrange care packages when required.
  • Ensure high-quality data and case recording in line with professional and council standards.

 

Requirements

 

  • HCPC-registered Occupational Therapist.
  • Significant post-qualifying experience within Adult Social Care or community-based OT practice.
  • Demonstrable leadership skills with experience supervising staff.
  • Strong expertise in complex assessments, Care Act duties, equipment, adaptations and moving & handling.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously while contributing to a multidisciplinary and cross-borough team.
